International CV: structure and example

An international CV is really several CVs, because there is no universal format. The structure below is the starting frame; the market you are applying into decides the specifics.

Quick answer

An international CV has no single format. Start from the destination market's norms on length, photo and personal details, then make two things obvious: your right to work and the equivalence of your qualifications. Frame experience so a stranger can size it, with recognisable employers and standardised achievements, and add languages where the market values them. Each destination needs its own version.

Overview

The single biggest mistake in applying abroad is using your home market's CV in a market with different conventions. An international CV starts from the destination's norms on length, photo and personal details, then makes two things obvious that overseas applicants often leave vague: your right to work, and the equivalence of your qualifications. The structure below adapts to the market; the corridor pages set out how each one differs.

Structure

How a international cv is put together.

Each section in order, with what it is doing. Use it as the frame; the content has to be your own.

  1. 01

    Contact details

Include current location and, in Gulf markets, nationality. Photo only where the market expects one.

  2. 02

    Profile

Targeted to the role and, where relevant, signalling your connection to or intent to work in that market.

  3. 03

    Work rights

State your status plainly if you hold the right to work. Ambiguity is the largest silent objection an overseas applicant faces.

  4. 04

    Experience

Framed with internationally recognisable employers and standardised achievements the reader can size without local context.

  5. 05

    Qualifications and equivalency

Make credentials easy to verify; note any recognition or assessment in progress.

  6. 06

    Skills and languages

Relevant skills in the posting's terms, plus languages where they matter to the market.

Why it works

What makes this version land.

  • Starts from the destination market's conventions, not your home format
  • Makes work-rights status explicit and easy to find
  • Foregrounds recognisable employers and verifiable credentials
  • Adapts length, photo and details to the target market

Watch for

What weakens this kind of CV.

  • One CV sent to every country regardless of local norms
  • Leaving work rights ambiguous, so the employer assumes sponsorship
  • Unverifiable qualifications in a market that checks them
  • Home-market jargon and references the overseas reader will not follow

FAQ

Questions about this CV type

Is there a universal international CV format?

No. Conventions on length, photos, personal details and spelling differ between countries and sometimes contradict each other, such as the Gulf's expected photo against the UK's photo-free norm. The closest thing to universal is a clean, single-column structure with clear headings, which you then adapt for each destination.

What is a Europass CV and should I use it?

Europass is the European Union's standard CV template, and it is accepted in many European applications, particularly public sector and academic roles. It is less common in private sector hiring and outside Europe, where it can look generic. Use it when an employer asks for it; otherwise write to the specific market's conventions.

How do I explain an employer that is unknown abroad?

Add one line of context under the employer name giving sector, size and market position, for example "National private hospital group, 2,000 staff across six sites". That lets an overseas reader size the role instantly. Without it, even a senior position at a major local company can read as a small job.

Should I include my nationality on an international CV?

Include it where the destination expects it, which in practice means the Gulf and some Asian markets, often alongside visa status. Leave it off in the UK, US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, and state your right-to-work position instead. Nationality and work rights are different things, so give the one the employer actually needs.
